Yoga, known as योग in Sanskrit, represents a complex interplay of physical, mental, and spiritual practices that trace their origins to ancient India. It encompasses a wide array of schools, practices, and philosophical goals, deeply rooted in the traditions of Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. Among the prominent forms of yoga are Hatha yoga and Rāja yoga.
The historical roots of yoga can be speculated to extend back to pre-Vedic traditions, with references found in the Rigveda. However, it likely crystallized during the ascetic movements of the sixth and fifth centuries BCE. The timeline for the earliest texts describing yoga practices remains ambiguous, though they are variably attributed to the Hindu Upanishads. Notable texts like the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali emerged around the first half of the first millennium CE, later gaining recognition in Western contexts throughout the 20th century. The development of Hatha yoga texts can be traced back to around the 11th century, often rooted in tantra.
The introduction of yoga to Western audiences was significantly influenced by Indian yoga gurus, particularly following Swami Vivekananda's successful lectures in the late 19th to early 20th centuries. By the 1980s, yoga transitioned into a popular form of physical exercise in Western societies. However, within Indian traditions, yoga transcends mere physicality; it embodies a meditative and spiritual essence. The discipline is also recognized as one of the six orthodox schools of Hindu philosophy, encompassing unique epistemological and metaphysical perspectives closely related to Samkhya philosophy.
Numerous studies have explored yoga's efficacy as a complementary therapy for conditions like cancer, schizophrenia, asthma, and heart disease. The outcomes have been mixed and often inconclusive; some studies involving cancer indicated negligible to unclear effectiveness, while others suggested potential benefits in reducing risk factors and supporting psychological recovery processes for patients. Recognizing its cultural significance, UNESCO listed yoga as an Intangible Cultural Heritage on December 1, 2016.
Within the practice of yoga, yogasana refers specifically to the various postures or asanas employed during practice. Early references to these yogic actions can be found within ancient texts like the Rigveda.
Pranayama is considered the fourth aspect within the eight limbs of yoga practice. Previous discussions have highlighted yamas (ethical disciplines), niyamas (self-discipline), and asanas (postures) as essential for maintaining physical well-being.
Following pranayama are pratyahara (withdrawal of senses), dhyana (meditation), dharana (concentration), and samadhi (absorption); together they represent mental disciplines integrated within yogic practice. Pranayama serves as a bridge between physical and mental exercises, promoting overall health and clarity of mind.
